All the glory that is Geils....
A summer reunion tour, with help from John Baruck, REO Speedwagon's manager, commenced to good reviews and attendance at 17 venues in the Summer of 1999. There were a few shows in Boston and Detroit in December 1999. The band, with Sim Cain filling in as drummer for Stephen Bladd (who decided not to tour because of family obligations) was met with warm response by fans and critics alike.
The band played a pre-tour gig under the moniker "Juke Joint Jimmy" at The Paradise rock club in Boston 6/20/99 to great reviews by critics and fans alike. One fan emailed me that the show was better than sex. The Boston Globe Critic Steve Morse said "the gig surpassed all expectations... the band's rapport with the crowd was uncanny. More important the Band seemed at ease with itself. Wolf and Justman left the stage arm in arm. One of many highlights during a comeback show that was an absolute joy."
Seth comments to the media just before the start of the summer tour before it happened: "It's a little surreal, but exciting. I'm as anxious as the next person to see how it all pans out. They said it couldn't be done [the reunion]."
Ironically the reunion was announced on a true Blue Moon! Apropos. Halleluhiah and praise be. Thanks everyone who emailed me about the reunion tour.
After the Letterman show where the band played their first reunion gig live on late nite TV, J. Geils himself was quoted as saying: "It's very, very, very weird."
The Band played a benefit concert 12/29/99 at the Orpheum Theatre Boston to benefit the Worcester Firefighters who were killed in a tragic fire that year.

I felt like the Drudge report.
Thanks to sources I had the internet scoop on the reunion tour a month before it was official. This is what I had posted in early March 99: "An anonymous tipster informed me today 3/5/99 that the band, all 6, has been in rehearsal all last month. Do I sniff a potential reunion here? Wow, this is most exciting news.An email from the Peter Wolf camp said "nothing is official yet" when asked recently about a potential reunion, BUT that is NOT a denial!" |
